Presenters share successful Florida advocacy efforts to pass the state’s “Normalcy Bill” to create a more supportive and normative growing up experience for children and youth in foster care. The law allows foster and kin caregivers to make prudent parental decisions about activities that their foster and kin children participate in, without having to seek the approval of the child welfare agency. The session includes:
- the strategic planning process
- shaping the message
- necessary and effective steps in being “heard” by legislators
- identifying and engaging community partners
- youth and adult partnerships
Presented by Robin Rosenberg, Florida’s Children First, Inc.; Geori Berman, Florida Youth Shine; and Florida Youth Shine youth members. 2014. Created as part of the Advocates for Families First collaboration of NACAC, the National Foster Parent Association, and Generations United.
